The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is more than just a nutrition program—it’s a lifeline for families. Established nationally in 1972 under the Child Nutrition Act of 1966, WIC was created to ensure that mothers and young children have access to the healthy foods and education they need to thrive.
In 1983, the Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) brought WIC to Guam, partnering with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to make this vital program available to our island community. Since then, WIC has been helping thousands of families every year by providing:
- Nutritious foods to support healthy growth and development
- Nutrition education to empower families with knowledge
- Breastfeeding support for moms and babies
All at no cost to those who qualify.
WIC is here for:
- Pregnant women
- Breastfeeding and postpartum moms
- Infants and children up to age five
To participate,
- families must live in Guam
- meet income guidelines
- be assessed by a health professional for nutritional risk
The Guam WIC Program uses a retail food delivery system, making it easy for families to shop for healthy foods at authorized stores. Each WIC food package is carefully designed to provide essential nutrients—like iron, calcium, and vitamins—that help moms and kids stay strong and healthy.
Every year, DPHSS works closely with USDA to keep WIC strong in Guam. Together, we’re committed to improving health, reducing food insecurity, and building a brighter future for our island’s families.
