05 Nov Popular federal program for families remains open despite shutdown
Despite the federal shutdown, the popular Women, Infants and Children, WIC special supplemental nutrition program that benefits thousands of families on Guam will remain operational.
The Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) announced Friday that all WIC clinics will be open to provide food benefits, nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and referral services to all eligible participants.
According to the announcement, “the Leon Guerrero – Tenorio administration stepped in earlier this month to identify local funds to sustain benefits when federal funds were unavailable.”
“Their swift action ensured that no family went without support during the initial phase of the shutdown, and their readiness to step in again if needed demonstrates their continued commitment to Guam’s mothers and children,” said Theresa Arriola, DPHSS director.
October food benefits remain redeemable at all authorized WIC vendors, and clients are encouraged to download and use the EzWIC App which can be downloaded from the Apple App store or Google Play store, for real time updates on benefits.
According to a DPHSS release, the app allows participants to check their balance, view available items, and receive important alerts and announcements directly from the WIC clinic, available anywhere and anytime.
WIC was established as a permanent program in 1974 to safeguard the health of low-income women, infants, and children up to age 5 who are at nutritional risk. This mission is carried out by providing nutritious foods to supplement diets, nutrition education (including breastfeeding promotion and support), and referrals to health and other social services.
While funded through grants from the federal government, WIC is administered by state and territorial agencies. For additional information or questions regarding WIC benefits, please contact the DPHSS WIC Program at (671) 475-0300 or email michael.gallo@dphss.guam.gov.
